When you see the words “deluge” and Genesis, most think “an overflowing of the land by water”? Let’s approach the deluge in Genesis from another view point: people being deluged by sin. We are overwhelmed with sinful opportunities: drugs, fornication, alcohol, money, greed, lying, gossip, golf, fishing, football. When you are overloaded with things that come between you and God – you are letting sin intervene between you and God. There is good news though! Just as He did for Noah, God loves you enough to intervene in your life so you know He is God.
During Noah’s day, Noah and his family were the ONLY people on earth who worshipped God. Some knew of God but rejected Him. Some did not even know who God was as they lived in the darkness of sin. The people of Noah’s day were deluged with sin. God’s Word had only begun to be told and in Genesis 6:6 we read mankind broke God’s heart and He was sad He ever made us!
Mankind was deluged with sinful opportunities and they chose to let sin intervene in their relationship with God. Only Noah and his family had remained faithful to God. God made the decision to erase mankind. In Genesis 6:7 God said He would destroy the birds and animals as well. Wow! Things must have really been bad! God was going to intervene at this point by wiping out mankind. But Noah was faithful to God and found His favor. Through Noah’s faithfulness, he influenced the way God would intervene. Did you know that your faithfulness influences God to act in your life?
God told Noah He would destroy the earth but Noah, his family, and one pair of each of the animals, would be saved. Rain for 40 days and 40 nights puzzled Noah! Up until this time in history, no one had ever seen rain! The fields, gardens, trees, and other living things were watered by the mist that would come up from the ground at night. I imagine Noah was overwhelmed with all these thoughts: destroy mankind, rain, get animals into a boat! God chose a simple thing such as rain to intervene.
Noah’s faith in God sustained him. God gave Noah instructions for the boat he was to build. The boat’s dimensional ratios that are recorded in the book of Genesis are still used by modern boat builders today! Noah constructed the boat over a period of 120 years. While Noah was working, friends and neighbors would stop by to poke fun at him. Rain? Noah are you crazy? A boat? Noah, look around – there’s no water within miles of here. Who is God the people must have asked? Again, Noah’s faith maintained him. Noah trusted God’s promise to intervene in his life. Do you?
Noah, his family, and the animals entered the boat and God destroyed every living thing on dry land just as He promised. There is an important point to be made here. Noah told the people the entire time he was working on the boat of God’s plan to destroy the earth and they didn’t listen. God has promised that He will once again bring earth to an end with the second coming of Jesus. Have people told you this and you haven’t listened? The earth today is a violent and wicked place and most have forgotten who the One, True, and Holy God is. Are you laughing at those who tell you about Jesus just like the people who laughed at Noah?
What are YOU letting intervene in your life that keeps you from God? Instead, will you let God intervene in your life? He will. In fact, He does already. Can you see it? Are you looking for it? God’s intervention can be as simple as the sunrise getting your attention, the opportunity to help someone less fortunate, a sickness in your family, a blessing in your life, a tough time in your life……see my point?
My friend, all things here will fade away and the “things” that we see, possess, and cherish are not the real ‘things’ at all. The real ‘things’ are those that our faith is built on: our love for God, our acceptance of His Son, Jesus, our forward looking to Heaven…. Those are the things to pursue. God is in everything you see, touch, smell, hear, and feel. His intervention is there for you every day. Won’t you recognize it and let Him be your God? God bless you and all and may God’s intervention strengthen you when the deluge of sin is offered up before you.
