Psalm 90
1Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. 3Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. 4For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 5Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. 6In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. 7For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. 8Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. 9For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. 10The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 11Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. 12So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. 13Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants. 14O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. 16Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. 17And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. - KJV

Papa JoeMac's Corner Commentary - #125
Thou Art God (How Great God Is)
Psalm 90

Joe's Pic
The words “Thou Art God” proclaim there is one God! They proclaim His Greatness and Majesty! Elijah called on God to prove He was the one true God (1 Kings 18:36) and God did just that. God proves to us every day He is God. All we have to do is to open our eyes and observe the world around us! He alone is God. There is no other. But to an unbelieving world, ‘God’ is sometimes a myth.

A commentary on Psalm 90 is a very difficult thing to do. How do you take the oldest portion of the Psalms (written by Moses) that talks about God’s eternal nature contrasted with human frailty and add anything to it? It is a difficult task indeed. Our time on earth is limited; eternity is not. Scripture urges wise use of our earthly time while keeping our ‘eyes’ on eternity. Scriptures tell us that to God a thousand years is but a day! The human mind cannot comprehend eternity. God’s attributes are clear in Scripture.

I do not want to challenge any Mosaic writings but I do not believe there are words that adequately describe how great God is! The Bible puts God’s attributes in words with which humankind can relate but our finite minds cannot completely comprehend God’s greatness. He is the creator! Think about what Scientists have shown. They have estimated that the number of stars in the universe is approximately equal to the number of grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet earth! Astronomers have calculated that the galaxy we live in is spinning at an incredible speed of 490,000 miles an hour! There are over 1,000,000,000 galaxies like ours in the universe! As large as our galaxy is, it takes 200,000,000 years to rotate one time! Wow, wow, wow!!! Truly, Thou Art God!!!! With just one thought, He created all things! From the void of time and space, God made the universe! He is Great!

Most often, and unfortunately, we call upon His Greatness when we are at low points in our lives. When we need a rescue, when we need our brokenness fixed, when we need help because we are in the throes of the consequences of our sins we call on Him. How great it would be if we called on Him simply because He is God! How great it would be if we would go into a room by ourselves, lift our faces towards heaven, and give God the thanks and praise He deserves! He is God. If we are not careful problems and heartaches can overwhelm us and cause us to feel that God has rejected us. When these times come, we need to refocus and remember that God is eternally with us. Scriptures teach us God will keep all His promises – not just a few. We may feel ‘abandoned’, but remember, we are not!

All the wonders of God are clearly evident to Believers. What if you are not a Believer? What if you are a doubter, a humanist, atheist, etc. that believes this ‘God stuff’ is all a myth? Can anyone change your mind, or should I ask, your heart?

Without being a Believer, one cannot dispute that the secular world describes ‘God” as the name of the Divine Being. It is the rendering of the Hebrew word ‘El, meaning ‘to be strong’. Taking the ‘faith’ variable out of the equation, even the secular world has arguments that there is a “God”. There is “Reason” - Testimony is afforded by reason. That is, there are truly changed lives for which there is no other explanation than the individual having been touched by “God”.

Then there is “Logic”. This is the natural procession from the facts of experience to causes. For example there is cosmological logic. This is summarized by that which is proved must have a “First Cause” of things. Then for every effect there must be a subsequent cause. Another example of reasoning there is a “God” is teleological logic or the argument of design. We see everywhere the operations of an intelligent Cause in nature. Additionally, there is the moral argument for God, called also the anthropological argument. This is the existence of a moral consciousness that forms the basis of the law (no murder, no theft, etc.). The ‘laws’ by which humankind are held to in an orderly society can only be explained by the presupposition of God’s existence.

“Thou Art God” shouts from the rooftop that there is a Divine Being. Where do you put your trust - in the Divine Being that Believers worship or in yourself?
