These passages give us insight into what will happen to us when we are “resurrected” in what is called a harpazo or rapture! Although most of this we can’t quite grasp, our trust in the Lord and our keeping our focus on Him, makes the thought of our transformation exciting indeed!! We’ll go from our Physical Bodies to our Resurrection Bodies! Wow! I’ll be able to eat all the fried chicken I want and not gain weight!
While we are in these earthly bodies, we all face limitations. Some of us may now have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities. But, the knowledge that God will take away this limitations gives us hope and comfort while we are here! Some of us may now be blind, but they can see a new way to live on earth through Christ. Some may now be deaf, but they can hear God’s Good News. Some of us may now be lame, but they can walk in God’s love. In spite of all these earthly ailments we may be suffering from, we can be encouraged that those disabilities are only temporary!! Paul tells us that we all will be given new bodies when Christ returns and that these bodies will be without disabilities, never to die or become sick. This can give us hope in our suffering.
Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Therefore for us, as Believers, death is no longer a source of dread or fear. Christ overcame it, and one day we will also. The law will no longer make sinners out of us who cannot keep it. Death has been defeated, and we have hope beyond the grave.
Our Physical Body is perishable. Our Resurrection Body is imperishable. Our Physical body is sown in dishonor. Our Resurrection Body is raised in glory. Our Physical Body is sown in weakness. Our Resurrection Body is raised in power. Our Physical Body is natural. Our Resurrection Body is spiritual. Our Physical Body is from the dust. Our Resurrection Body is from Heaven!!
Why aren’t we perfect and without these ailments? I know, I know, you’ve heard it before, but it’s basic Truth. Sin has caused all creation to fall from the perfect state in which God created it. The “fall” in the Garden of Eden set us on the track we are on today! However, God immediately set a plan in action to save us!!! The world is in bondage to death and decay so that it cannot fulfill its intended purpose. One day all creation will be liberated and transformed. Until that time it waits in eager expectation for the resurrection of God’s children. I can’t imagine what it will be like (hmmm, sounds like the song, eh?). In my mind’s eye I try to imagine all the colors that we’ve never seen before….how they will just burst into being when Christ comes to rapture His people. Exciting stuff!!!
We Christians see the world as it is—physically decaying and spiritually infected with sin – as we do not live in the “Holy Huddle” all the time! But Christians do not need to be pessimistic, because they have hope for future glory. They look forward to the new heaven and new earth that God has promised, and they wait for God’s new order that will free the world of sin, sickness, and evil. In the meantime, Christians go with Christ into the world where they heal people’s bodies and souls and fight the evil effects of sin in the world.
We will be resurrected in the rapture or harpazo to heavenly, spiritual, glorified bodies like the body Christ now has in heaven. We have the “foretaste,” the first installment or down payment of future glory—the Holy Spirit—as a guarantee of our resurrection life. Be encouraged!
