"Show me a sign, show me a sign!" In John 10:36-38, Jesus told the religious leaders that He had done all the things that the Father sent Him to do. Therefore, since He had done the work of the Father, they should be able to see that the Father was in Him and He was in the Father. Even if they didn’t believe in Jesus himself, they should have been able to clearly believe in what He had done and know that the Father was in Him. Jesus did many miracles: physical and supernatural, but sadly, the religious leaders did not get it. They could not see past their own pride that the Messiah had come; they missed it. The Jews wanted a sign but didn’t see when it happened. Have you missed it? Today people are lost and looking for a sign when the truth that can set them free is clear - Jesus is Lord.
There are 35 miracles recorded in Scripture. Jesus apparently did others. John 21:25 says only a fraction of Jesus’ acts were recorded! Do miracles and Deity go together? Did Jesus do miracles to prove His Deity? Do you require a miracle before you believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Why do you think Jesus performed miracles? Too many questions? If you knew there was a ’man’ in town who turned water into wine, raised the dead, healed the sick, stopped a woman’s bleeding, walked on water, healed the blind, took money from a fish’s mouth, forced demons into swine, wouldn’t you go see this person? I would! The people of Jesus’ day were no different. Jesus used miracles to gather people to Him so that he could teach them and show them the ways of God. If a person was traveling from town to town claiming to be the Son of God, wouldn’t you expect the miraculous? Well, yes, we would. Jesus used miracles to support His claim that He is the Son of God. His miracles were not only physical (healings) but also supernatural! That’s a God thing! He calmed the raging sea! While Jesus used miracles to support His divine claims, the miracles did not bring people to understanding. Their faith did. Jesus clearly knew this. There are miracles recorded where the people still did not believe (Mark 6:52 and John 12:37 for examples).
During Jesus’ day, the Jews wanted a ’sign’ from Heaven in order for them to believe. The Greeks wanted what agreed with their own wisdom before they would believe (1 Corinthians 1:22). By doing miracles, Jesus fulfilled both of these ’requirements’ but still the people did not believe. He knew it would be that way. Will it take a ’miracle’ for you to believe that Jesus is who He says He is? If you saw a miracle - and you have - would or did you recognize it? Every day miracles occur around us. I have a friend who was cured of cancer. I believe that to be a miracle! Others do not believe his healing is a miracle. They say doctors and chemo cured the cancer. My friend and I know better.
The things of God seem foolish to those who do not believe. They have no faith. Do miracles produce faith? The answer is no. Scripture tells us that faith comes from things unseen. Our world worships power, wealth and influence. Those things were not on Jesus’ agenda. He came humbly into this world so that we could be saved. By faith in Him we are saved from eternal damnation. By His miracles, He supported His claims of Deity - they did not prove to the people Jesus was the Son of God! By faith in Him we are saved just as those who believed when they were with Jesus and He did miracles!
I’d like to sum up this commentary by offering you this: if you are looking for a miracle, they happen all around you. If you are waiting for a miracle to convince you Jesus as the Son of God; it is not going to happen. It did not for the religious leaders Jesus met face to face and it will not for you. It did not for many of the people present when Jesus performed miracles and it will not for you. Believing that Jesus said what He meant and meant what He said requires that you take a ’leap of faith’ into ’things not seen’ and accept Jesus for who He says He is. Faith comes not from things seen but discerned with the heart. Is your heart ready? I know it is. The miracle is that the God of the Universe gives us all the opportunity to come to Him just as we are!
