We serve a sovereign God. According to Scripture, this means that God can do what He wants to and when He wants to because He has the absolute right to do all things according to His own good pleasure. King David recognized the sovereignty of God. His relationship with God gave him the strength and courage to withstand undeserved criticism. Often, people deny the sovereignty of God and I understand. I have been there. Young, rebellious, and not wanting anyone to tell me anything skewed my view of God. During that season of my life, I thought God to be over-bearing, hard, and demanding. Do this, don’t do this, act like this, don’t act like this, think like this, don’t think like this, etc. The list of rules seemed endless. When I was criticized, I struck back as quickly as I could and as nastily as I could. I did not see God’s sovereignty at work in my life. I was blinded to it. King David was not.
I praise God that I can say by His Grace and Mercy I now know Him on a personal basis and I cheerfully and gladly acknowledge His Sovereignty. He is always leading, always guiding, and always there for me whether I am a valley or standing on a peak. We all experience a series of valleys and peaks but when we come to the point that our relationship with God is on a personal basis, denying His sovereignty is no longer an option. I now know when people falsely accuse me that my God is there. I now rest in Him.
King David recognized God’s Sovereignty. King David was being unjustly accused of having been part of Saul’s death. Shimei tirelessly continued to come against King David with his verbal abuse. Instead of reacting with vengeance, King David knew that God would cover him. He and his men quietly endured the accusations and allowed God to deal with this situation in His timeframe and at His direction. God’s Sovereignty goes way beyond our understanding. God is omnipotent. He ’sees’ all and His timing is often not understood by mankind. Even as King David approached death, he counseled his son Solomon concerning God’s Sovereignty knowing God would bring closure in His own good timing.
Shimei had criticized God’s leaders. This is a serious thing to God. Do you prayerfully and diligently support God’s leaders or do you criticize them? Before criticizing someone in a leadership position, we must first ask God to remove such feelings from our hearts and secondly, turn the situation over to Him, just as King David had done. After King David died Solomon was working to unify the people. Shimei had been sentenced to remain in Jerusalem and not cross the valley. However, Shimei defied King Solomon’s decree. As a result, Shimei was executed. His execution was not an act of bloodshed but one of justice. It was an act of peace necessary to unify God’s people. By recognizing God’s Sovereignty, King David’s belief that God would take care of all the details came to fruition.
Do you acknowledge the sovereignty of God in your life? Do you trust God to bless you and defend you? It is important to view ourselves as God does. Being honest with ourselves is the first step. We should never compare ourselves to anyone because God looks at us; not our friends or associates. God’s looks at our heart and holds each of us accountable for our actions. King David loved the Lord and like many of us, had some major sins in his life. If we reflect David’s actions and repent as David repented of his sins and turned to God for guidance, God will forgive us, lift us up, and handle many of the "loose ends" in our lives. King David realized that through the sovereignty of God, God lovingly protects His children even though we may not understand His timing. In the throes of life, we can take joy in the sovereignty of God.
Our prayer life should also reflect our recognition of God’s Sovereignty. By that I mean we should not ’demand’ anything of God. God will do what He does when He wants to at His own good pleasure. We are not in a position to demand things of God. The Bible describes God, the Creator, being the Potter and we, His creations, being the clay. Our existence depends on our Creator. Be a King David! Walk with God, arm in arm, everyday of your life. Acknowledge His Sovereignty in your life. Realize that God loves you and has your best interests at heart. He wants to bless you and keep you. Let Him. Be blessed!
