Ephesians 6:10-17
10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: - KJV

Is spiritual warfare for real?!?! Are there demons and demonic powers that do all they can to come between us and the Lord God? Well, yeah! There are. Do we really battle the “darkness” everyday – at work, in our prayer life, in the recesses of all that we do? Not sure about you, but I do! To use an old cliché, we live in a “fallen world” – and it gets rough!! As Christians, we truly do battle against rulers and authorities. If we check out other scriptures (such as 1 Peter 5:8) we read about how lions attack sick, young, or straggling animals. The world is similar at times. It chooses victims who are alone or not alert. We are warned to watch out for Satan when we are suffering or being persecuted.

Feeling alone, weak, helpless, and cut off from other believers, so focused on our troubles that we forget to watch for danger, we are especially vulnerable to Satan’s attacks. During times of suffering, seek other Christians for support. Keep your eyes on Christ, and resist the Devil. Then, says James, “he will flee from you”.

To withstand worldly attacks, we must depend on God’s strength and use every piece of his armor. In the letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul is not only giving this counsel to the church, the body of Christ, but to all individuals within the church. The whole body needs to be armed. As you do battle against the “mighty powers of darkness,” fight in the strength of the church, whose power comes from the Holy Spirit.

At this point I do want to tell you something that you probably are aware of but may not have really concentrated on. That is that satan CANNOT read your mind! Satan is not omniscient like God. Satan is not omnipresent like God! So, when battling satan and his evil forces, VERBALIZE! When you pray silently “satan I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”, can I tell you something? Satan cannot hear you!! He cannot read your mind! Verbalize it! Shout it to the ceiling! “Satan, I rebuke you and your evil angels and demons in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!”

Say it! Only then will YOUR attack on and resistance to satan be realized by that demon! Satan’s only pleasure in his miserable existence is to hurt God by using us!!! Don’t let that happen! Get involved in a group – a group of Believers! Don’t be alone. Don’t try to “help yourself” without the help of others and through prayer. Satan preys on the lonely, the outcasts, and those who think they “can stand on their own”. We only have to watch the news to see how the lonely and those who are outcast can bring such terror to high school and college campuses. When you feel yourself slipping into a depressed state or feeling ‘down and out’, call on your Christian body to surround you and go to battle with you! Satan doesn’t have a chance when confronted by the people of God when they are “dressed for battle”!

Satan truly does have control over the demons Paul speaks of – and they are not mere fantasies—they are very real. We face a powerful army whose goal is to defeat Christ’s church. When we believe in Christ, these beings become our enemies, and they try every device to turn us away from him and back to sin. We are assured of victory, but we must engage in the struggle until Christ returns, because Satan is constantly battling against all who are on the Lord’s side. We need supernatural power to defeat Satan, and God has provided this by sending the Holy Spirit and his armor surrounding us. If you feel discouraged, remember Jesus’ words: “Upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it”.

Jesus called Peter “the rock”. Peter, even though he was weak, was strong with Christ! The scriptures clearly show that Peter portrays the church as a living, spiritual temple, with Christ as the foundation and cornerstone and each believer as a stone. Paul portrays the church as a body, with Christ as the head and each believer as a member. This correlates with the book of Ephesians where believers are seen as a community.

Keep up your guard. Read God’s Word. Put on your armor daily. Until Jesus comes back, we – who are not of this world but of His – live in this world as ‘aliens’. And while we are here, we do battle. But not alone!!!
